Roberta Hill Whiteman
According to the Poetry Foundation’s website, Roberta Hill Whiteman was born in 1947 and grew up in Green Bay, Wisconsin. She was raised in the Oneida Native American community and is still a member today. According to the University of Minnesota’s website, Hill Whiteman attended the University of Wisconsin-Green Bay where she earned her Bachelors degree in creative communications. According to the Poetry Foundation, she then went on to attend the University of Montana where she earned her Master of Fine Arts degree in creative writing. Hill Whiteman completed her studies at the University of Minnesota where she earned a PhD in American studies. After earning her degrees, she went on to teach English and American studies at the Oneida and Rosebud reservations. After that, Dr. Hill Whiteman went on to teach in the Poets-in-the-Schools program in states such as Arizona, Minnesota, and Oklahoma. According to the Poetry Foundation’s website, she is currently the Associate Professor of English and American studies at the University of Wisconsin-Madison.
When she’s not teaching, Hill Whiteman is known for her work as an award-winning poet. According to the Poetry Foundation’s website, she has written three poetry collections including Star Quilt(1984), Philadelphia Flowers(1995), and Cicadas: New and Selected Poems(2013). According to the University of Minnesota’s website, Dr. Hill Whiteman got her inspiration in poetry from her grandmother, Dr. Lillie Rosa Minoka-Hill, who was the second Native American woman to hold a medical degree in the United States. Hill Whiteman was won multiple awards for her poetry including the 1991 Wisconsin Idea Foundation’s Excellence Award. According to the Poetry Foundation, she was also awarded a National Endowment for the Arts grant. According to the University of Minnesota, Hill currently resides in Wisconsin with her three kids, Jacob, Heather, and Melissa.
